Hans Arne Haldorsen the creative force behind Two in a Bowl, recently opened up about his eclectic background and artistic journey. Describing himself as a Norwegian cartoonist graphic designer photographer pyrotechnician and crossword puzzle creator Haldorsen notes that his varied skill set is often considered unusual. Over the years, he’s experimented with a wide range of mediums from pencil and charcoal to watercolor and acrylics. Yet, he found himself most drawn to the bold clarity of ink and markers, which gave his work the distinct sharp lines he’s now known for. Today, the artist has embraced digital tools for his comic creations though he still enjoys the tactile process of sketching with pencil and paper keeping some traditional methods alive in his otherwise tech-driven workflow.

Curious about the creative process behind Two in a Bowl we reached out to Hans A. who shared some insights into the series’ unique concept. The comic revolves around two small fish a green one and an orange one who inhabit the confined world of a goldfish bowl. While their physical space is limited the possibilities for humor and absurdity are endless. According to Hans despite their small universe the fish find themselves in all sorts of quirky unpredictable situations as they swim and interact with one another. The series plays with the contrast between their simple surroundings and the complex often humorous scenarios that unfold within them.

Hans A. also explained that the dynamic between the two fish in Two in a Bowl is inspired by the classic comedic pairing of opposites, much like the legendary duos of Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello. In these types of relationships, one character often plays the fool whose actions whether intentional or not tend to affect the more grounded partner. The contrast between the two fish’s personalities creates a natural tension, fueling the humor in their interactions as the more naïve fish’s antics sometimes cause chaos for the other.
