We had the chance to chat with Nate, who kindly agreed to give us some insight into his latest creations. Noticing that single-panel comics often lean heavily on visual elements, we were curious about how Nate decides when to let the artwork take the spotlight versus when the text steps in to enhance the joke. According to Fakes, the process unfolds naturally. It just comes together as I write, he told us. Sometimes, I’ll come up with a funny image and build a gag around it while other times, I write the joke first and figure out how the art should complement it. I get especially excited when I can create a comic with no text that still lands though it’s rare it’s always a fun surprise when it works out.

We were also curious if the single-panel format ever feels limiting for Nate. He shared his thoughts on balancing the challenge of telling a complete story or delivering a punchline within such a confined space. Most of the time having a gag comic doesn’t feel too restrictive, Nate explained. When it does, I make use of my Sunday comics which are larger. Sometimes, I’ll add multiple panels in those. The exciting part of gag cartooning is the challenge of crafting something that can make people laugh in such a brief space. Condensing a full story into a small frame isn’t always easy but it keeps my mind sharp. That said, I also enjoy longer projects. Right now, I’m working on a comic strip with a friend and developing a graphic novel.
