“Dave Covertly’s ‘Speed Bump’: 20 Comical Moments with Everyday Life and Quirky Creatures”

Dave Coverly, the creative mind behind the beloved comic strip “Speed Bump,” explores the quirks of human nature, pop culture, and the amusing antics of animals through his clever, one-panel cartoons. His work strikes a perfect balance between sharp wit and thought-provoking commentary, offering a glimpse into the oddities of everyday life.

In a past conversation, Dave shared his approach to creating comics: “What matters most to me is that the ideas resonate with the universal experiences we all share and that they have substance. Sure, I tell a joke now and then just for fun, but the cartoons that excite me are the ones that blend humor with meaning. The best cartoons are funny and thoughtful, with something to say. I believe relevance and insight are what makes a cartoon truly relatable. As Mark Twain put it, ‘There’s a kernel of truth in every jest,’ which is something I always keep in mind when crafting observational humor.”

Now, let’s dive into the latest batch of Dave’s creations and enjoy what he’s been working on since our last update!

“One of the most valuable pieces of advice I ever received came from the brilliant cartoonist Jim Borgman. He told me to stop looking at anyone else’s work for six months and just focus on discovering the kind of cartoons I would draw. It was a tough challenge, but incredibly rewarding. Over time, I developed my style through trial and error. I’d make a mistake in my drawing, then look at it and think, ‘Hey, I like that!’ And so, I kept going.

Those ‘errors’ eventually accumulated into the unique style I have today, which still makes me laugh. From a writing perspective, I started out doing more wordplay-based jokes, but I soon realized the cartoons I enjoyed the most were the ones that had more depth. They touched on something human, something universally relatable. So, my writing evolved to meet that higher bar. Of course, I don’t always hit that mark—sometimes, I’ll settle for a classic dog-butt sniff joke—but hey, everyone needs a little humor to strive for!”
