“20 of My Most Absurd Single-Panel Comics That Will Leave You Wondering”

Hello, I’m Steven Garza, a stand-up comedian and aspiring cartoonist. My journey into cartooning was a slow and winding one, starting as a side project that I never fully embraced until years later. It wasn’t until I took a leap of faith, despite not knowing how to draw, that I gave it a real shot. Seven years ago, I walked into Blick’s, bought a sketchpad and pencils, and tried my hand at drawing. The realization quickly hit that cartooning wasn’t going to be a simple task. But after years of practice, reading “How To” books, and filling crumpled paper with failed attempts, I finally began posting my work online—and to my surprise, people liked it.

One of my creations is Fret Buzzed, a comic strip that follows two middle-aged former musicians struggling to keep their dreams alive while navigating the responsibilities of adulthood. It’s a four-panel strip with a consistent storyline, but I also love to create single-panel gags for the weirder ideas that don’t quite fit into the main narrative. Sometimes, the characters from Fret Buzzed pop up in these one-off strips, giving fans a fun treat—a little Easter egg for those familiar with the characters. They get to see them in bizarre, offbeat situations that don’t necessarily tie into the main plotline.
