Lola Simpson sat in her wheelchair, gazing at the small garden outside her window at Big Hearts Nursing Home. Another year had gone by, and nothing had changed for her. Her daughter, Natalie, and son-in-law, Roger, hadn’t called or visited her in years. Six years earlier, when Lola was 80, her health began to decline. She needed help with basic tasks and struggled to care for herself. Though Lola had always been a cheerful, lively woman, time and age had caught up with her.
When Natalie realized her mother needed constant care, she didn’t want the responsibility. Instead, she sent Lola to live in a nursing home and moved into her mother’s house with Roger. “Mrs. Simpson, are you okay? Can I help you?” Mary asked gently.
Lola wiped her tears and sighed, “It’s my daughter. She hasn’t visited me in six years. I keep hoping she’ll come, but every year, I wait for nothing.”
Mary, knowing Lola’s story, felt sympathy for the elderly woman. She had heard from the other staff that Lola’s daughter and son-in-law had abandoned her. Trying to lift Lola’s spirits, Mary smiled and said, “They say patience always pays off. Your life might change when you least expect it. Besides, crying doesn’t suit someone as beautiful as you.”
Lola blushed, feeling a little better. “You have a kind heart, dear. Thank you for listening.”
That night, Mary couldn’t stop thinking about Lola. She felt a deep sadness for the older woman and wanted to help. Over dinner, she brought up the idea to her husband, Josh.
“Josh, there’s a woman at the nursing home where I work. She’s all alone, and her family has abandoned her. I was wondering if we could take her in,” Mary said, her voice hopeful.
Josh frowned, shaking his head. “We’re barely making ends meet as it is. We can’t afford to take in anyone else, especially with the kids.”
Mary tried to explain, “She was kicked out by her own daughter and son-in-law. She’s been waiting six years for them to visit, but they never come. She’s so lonely.”
Josh paused, thinking about his own mother, whom he barely visited before she passed. The guilt weighed on him. After a moment, he sighed, “Alright, we’ll figure something out.”
With Josh’s approval, Mary began the paperwork to bring Lola home. Once everything was finalized, Lola moved in with Mary’s family. She quickly became part of the household, bonding with Mary’s children, who called her “Grandma.” For the first time in years, Lola felt truly happy and loved.
One morning, Lola received a letter. She recognized the handwriting immediately and smiled as she opened it. Mary, noticing her excitement, asked, “Mrs. Simpson, what’s the letter about?”
Lola’s eyes filled with tears as she read the letter. “It’s from my stepbrother, Morgan. He’s left me his fortune.”
Morgan, who had been ill for a long time, had promised their mother he would always look after Lola. Since Morgan had no family of his own and only a few months left to live, he decided to leave his $2.3 million fortune to his sister.
Word soon reached Natalie and Roger that Lola had inherited a large sum of money. Suddenly interested in reconnecting with her, they hurried to the nursing home, only to find out she had left months ago. When they asked the receptionist for her new address, they were handed a slip of paper with Mary’s address on it. “Your mother’s where she belongs now,” the receptionist told them.
When Natalie and Roger showed up at Mary’s house, pretending to care, Lola wasn’t fooled. She opened the door, looked them straight in the eyes, and said, “I’m sorry, but I don’t know you. My real family doesn’t let strangers in.”
She slammed the door in their faces, refusing to let them manipulate her again.
In the end, Natalie and Roger got what they deserved. Lola, however, found a new family in Mary, Josh, and their children. Grateful for their kindness, she decided to leave her fortune to them after her death. Lola also filed a lawsuit to reclaim her house from Natalie and Roger, and after a long legal battle, she won.
As for Natalie and Roger, Lola didn’t care where they were or what they were doing. She had found peace and happiness with her new family. When Morgan passed away, Mary and Josh took care of his funeral, honoring his memory.
Lola’s health improved, and she continued to live a joyful life with Mary’s family, surrounded by the love and care she had always deserved.
